Looking at both sides: Mechanical and Electrical

ready

Engineers tend to have highly specific training for their particular field. When it comes to Mechatronics, the combination of mechanical and electrical, engineering disciplines begin the same project from two different starting points. A project manager is crucial for the success of the project to bring these two engineering efforts together.

Whether designing a solar PV tracker, small-scale implanted medical devices or factory automation, it is important to start with a clear project scope. Second, the mechanical team should size the mechanical components first. Lastly, the electrical engineering team should determine the appropriate size and type of motor, drive and controller needed.

Many times, these projects are led by engineers with preconceived conclusions when it comes to selecting the right linear motion product. Depending on their required specifications, a less expensive option could be the best solution. The success of the team is determined by “right sizing” the project for the optimal operating efficiency.

Consulting a linear motion expert is the best advice when you begin a electro-mechanical project. There are many calculators and configurators available to help in the sizing of your application. Look to makingmotionwork.com as a resource for many of these.

How to find a vendor that provides a complete solution

hands

When you’re looking for the right solution provider, you’ll find it’s best to look for someone to provide more than only a part or service. You want to start by looking at this long term. What you really need is a solution partner. First, ask why you need a solution provider.

The ideal situation is to find an extension of you, a solution provider that provides all the product offerings and then some. This firm should bring so much more to the party in areas that you are lacking or have budget limitations. The best partners provide things like intellectual property, industry knowledge and a complete second tier of vendors that will contribute to the total solution.

As with so many other relationships, communication is the most important attribute. You’ll want to communicate your goals, timeline and even share budget targets. This will ensure the solution is sized properly to the project scope and the expectations of the team and senior management.

Most companies are looking to reduce their vendor base for components. When evaluating current and future vendors, always consider the value-add that a true solution provider delivers.

Eliminate the Silo and become a Change Agent

We live in a world of instant communication and yet, we are sometimes not good communicators. Poor communication is usually the root problem for creating silos in many technology-driven companies. Development secrets are usually held tightly and limited to only those in the organization who “need to know”.

When you start limiting the flow of information in your organization, divides begin among associates, departments and divisions. Many mature brands struggle with the problem of departmental silos, while some start-ups introduce products at lightning speed. How can this happen? The reason is communication is their lifeline to survival and success.

Look around your organization for signs of silos. You’ll find:
– Special projects in every department no one has heard of.
– Too few meetings to inform senior staff of progress.
– Poor communication from the top illustrating how your efforts fit into the big plan.

Many companies recognize this problem but most don’t know how to address it. The senior staff needs to appoint a cross-functional team of people committed to change, “Change Agents” if you will.

With the backing of the senior staff, this team has the authority to break down barriers of communication throughout the organization. A process needs to be put in place and everyone needs to take ownership.

Change will come through the commitment of proven leaders in the organization as they drive the change process.

When you think about Las Vegas, gambling is probably the first thing that comes to mind – hit the Casinos, and take your chances on the tables. Attending a concert or a show, comedy act, people watching, and eating at some of the world’s best restaurants, are all things to keep you entertained. Besides these everyday activities, here few things that make Las Vegas a city on the MOVE.

Thrill seekers who want to Make Motion Work should check out Fremont Street’s SLOTZILLA, a 12-story slot machine inspired zip line that runs the length of Fremont Street. The SlotZilla Las Vegas urban zip line is unlike any other experience in Las Vegas, or the world, and is guaranteed to quicken your pulse and give you a rush.

A National Historic Landmark, Hoover Dam is the highest concrete dam in the Western Hemisphere, standing at more than 725 feet above the Colorado River. With 17 generators producing 4 billion kilowatts of electricity a year, it also is one of the country’s largest hydroelectric power facilities. The Dam is 35 miles south of Las Vegas on U.S. 93. The power is jaw dropping.

Cirque du Soleil is a dramatic mix of circus arts and street entertainment. 8 shows are currently running in Vegas, the two latest being The Beatles LOVE and Michael Jackson ONE. Be amazed by the stunts and wowed by the music! Watch for the sets coming out of the floor…powered by Nook Jacks, perhaps?

A way to be part of the motion instead of just watching it, is Caesar’s new High Roller. Catch the best views of the infamous Las Vegas strip on the world’s tallest observation wheel. At 550 feet tall, the wheel takes 30 minutes to complete one full revolution and features 28 glass-enclosed cabins that can hold up to 40 people.

If you check any of these places out in LV, be sure to send me a tweet and let me know what you thought @NookInd. Follow me and see where I end up September 28-30! Viva Las Vegas and see you at PackExpo 2015!

Industry Insights at Arm’s Reach

With so many markets, products and changes happening  within the industry, it can be a challenge for designers to know where to find reliable and helpful information . Luckily, we’ve provided two companies who work hard in delivering topnotch, insightful content to help broaden your knowledge of the industry.

You might know Rockwell Automation as the world’s largest company for industrial automation and information, but did you know the company delivers a wide array of white papers, tools and other industrial automation methods, trends and technologies? The Journal from Rockwell  and Our PartnerNetwork™ recently published “The Basics of Ball Screws,” which teaches the key terms, preloading methods and calculations for understanding ball screws.

Rockwell also provides beneficial tools, such as its “Motion Analyzer,” which offers an inertia calculator and compatibility browser for a variety of different products, including linear motion products & systems.

Design World provides daily news in the industry, videos, tech tutorials, webinars and trending topics.According to its website, “Design World is written for engineers by engineers with an emphasis on applying the engineering fundamentals to real world machine design applications across industries including medical, packaging, semiconductor, material handling, and off-highway.” From pneumatics to robotics, the magazine and its digital brand stand as invaluable resources for designers and engineers who wish to be ahead of the curve in the latest industry happenings.
